A Seed Paper Activity to Teach Preschoolers about Recycling and Sustainability
Are you looking for an engaging and educational activity to teach your preschool-aged children about Earth Day, recycling, and the importance of sustainability?

Look no further! This blog post will outline a fun, hands-on lesson plan that involves planting seeds and making seed paper from recycled materials. Your little ones will not only learn about the importance of caring for our planet, but they will also develop fine motor skills and gain experience in creating art from recycled materials.
Materials and Resources:
To start, gather the following materials and resources:
Age-appropriate storybooks about Earth Day and recycling, such as:
Mary Had a Little Plan by Tammi Sauer, illustrated by Vanessa Brantley Newton
Hello, Garden by Katherine Pryor and Rose Soini (Board Book for littlest learners)
Seed paper-making supplies:
Old magazines, newspapers, and papers
Large plastic containers for soaking paper
Blender or food processor
Strainer
Recycled paper-making form (wooden frame with mesh)
Seeds (small and easy to grow, such as wildflowers or herbs)
Towels or sponges for pressing paper
Paper punches or scissors for cutting shapes
Activity Steps:
Introduction (10 minutes): Begin by reading a story about Earth Day and recycling to your preschoolers. Discuss the importance of recycling and protecting the environment.
Making Seed Paper (40 minutes): For groups, divide the children into groups for each station. For smaller groups, you can just do these steps in order. :
Step/Station 1: Ripping paper - Have children tear old magazines and papers into small pieces.
Step/Station 2: Soaking and blending paper - Blend paper until it reaches a pulp consistency, then add seeds to the mix for a sensory exploration!
Step/Station 3: Making paper - Strain water from the pulp mixture, place moistened fibers onto a recycled paper-making form, and press out excess water using rollers.
Step/ Station 4: Creating Shapes from Seed Paper Once the paper is dry, have children cut shapes from the seed paper using scissors or paper punches. Let them take their seed paper shapes home to plant.

As you lead the preschoolers through activities to celebrate Earth Day, observe how well they understand recycling concepts and can follow instructions. Watch as they work together to make seed paper—and assess their fine motor skills during group activities.
To wrap up the activity, recap the importance of Earth Day, recycling, and sustainability. Encourage your preschoolers to plant their seed paper shapes at home and care for their plants. Recommend additional resources, such as books or videos, for further exploration of Earth Day and recycling topics.
In conclusion, this Earth Day activity is a fantastic way to introduce preschoolers to the concepts of recycling and sustainability while having fun and learning valuable skills. Give it a try, and watch your little ones grow into environmentally conscious individuals!
